What you’ll be doing

Here’s your chance to join some of the most skilled underwriters in commercial insurance and study for a professional qualification while you earn a competitive salary. 

As a Commercial Underwriting Apprentice your focus will be on customers – both existing and those yet to join us. You’ll spend time building professional working relationships with our brokers, helping secure new business while ensuring customers already with us get the best solutions, tailored to their wants and needs. Everything you do will have an impact on the underwriting profit and loss figures in your region, so you’ll need to be determined to secure the best results, every day on every project.

Where you’ll be based:

The idea of flexible working isn’t new around here. It’s been part of life for quite some time. So, depending on the nature of your role and the needs of the business at the time, you can expect your apprenticeship to consist of a blend of both office and home working, wherever in the UK you join us. Currently, we are offering Commercial Underwriting Apprenticeships in Glasgow, Manchester, Norwich, Leeds, Birmingham, London, Worthing and Bristol. 

What you’ll need

Commercial underwriting for an industry leader is full of brilliant challenges and opportunity. To make the most of what’s on offer in this apprenticeship, you’ll need:

  • To have, or be on track to achieve, at least 2 A-levels or 3 Highers (Scotland) at grades C or above (or equivalent)
  • 5 GCSEs or National 5s A*-C or 9-4 to include English,and Maths (or equivalent)
  • Natural problem-solving skills·      
  • A hunger to learn new things·      
  • The ability to work independently, within underwriting authority as well as in a wider team·      
  • Unbounded curiosity about our customers’ needs·      
  • The determination to work tirelessly to find appropriate solutions 

What will you get for this role? 

  • A starting salary from £19,700 (unless based in London - £21,100)
  • Regular pay increases as you complete elements of your apprenticeships. We expect by the end of the 3rd year of the programme you will be earning over £25,000 (over £30,000 for London) depending on performance
  • A permanent role, right from the outset, where you’ll be taught and developed from the ground up with real responsibilities 

Professional qualifications aligned to your role:

England

  • Year 1: Level 3 Insurance Practitioner & Chartered Insurance Institute Qualifications (equivalent to A-Levels)
  • Years 2 & 3: Level 4 Insurance Professional & Chartered Insurance Institute Qualifications (equivalent to a foundation degree) 


Scotland

  • Year 1: Providing Financial Services Modern Apprenticeship & Chartered Insurance Institute Qualifications
  • Years 2 & 3: Insurance Technical & Chartered Insurance Institute Qualifications.

How to apply

Applications are now open for Commercial Underwriting Apprenticeships starting in September 2022. We’ll assess your strengths and look at how well you connect with our values throughout the recruitment process. The process itself involves:  

  • Making an online application – this will include answering a short questionnaire and attaching your CV.
  • If you pass the initial CV screen, you’ll be sent an online test  
  • Pass this, and you’ll have an interview with us 
  •  And if you do well in these, the next step is an assessment centre

If you are successful then you will start in September!
