In Summary
Maths can have the predictive powers of a crystal ball (seriously) and we want someone who can wield them. Do you think you’re up to the task? Then we want to hear from you!
Job Description
Based in York
Do you love to tackle problems? Is maths one of your key strengths and passions? Do you want to gain experience working within a FTSE 100 company?
If so, then our 12-month scheme, starting between July and September 2024, could be the ideal opportunity for you. You’ll be able to put the theory you’ve already learnt at university to great use by coupling it with real industry experience.
What does it involve?Actuaries are problem solvers and strategic thinkers. They share a love of maths and use their skills to help measure the probability and risk of future events. They are passionate about finding ways to support our customers without exposing ourselves to unnecessary risk. From reporting to pricing, from valuations to solvency, from data to digital, our actuaries have a say. A big say!
In fact, at Aviva we have one of the largest networks of actuaries in the country so you will be in good hands from the beginning. Based in our UK Insurance business in York, our Year in Industry students have numerous opportunities to learn and to network, whilst developing their skills and expertise.
Our placement schemes roles are within the Financial and Regulatory Reporting team and Group Actuarial and Capital Change team and will give real responsibility for tasks and decisions that will affect our business. The work includes:
- Production of Solvency II and IFRS results for existing and new business
- Updating complex spreadsheets and code, checking their inputs, and analysing the results
- Understanding MS Excel formulae, investigating issues in R code and in our data
- Identifying areas of the process that could be improved (and improving them!)
As well as your line manager, there will also be a buddy within the team to support you and an actuarial qualified mentor who will work with you throughout the year, to offer additional guidance and coaching.
What’s in it for you?
- Starting salary of £25,750
- Aviva will contribute up to 14% to your personal pension (dependent on your contribution)
- Eligibility for annual performance bonus
- Family friendly parental and carer’s leave
- 25 days holiday per year plus bank holidays and the option to buy/sell up to 5 additional days
- Up to 40% discount for Aviva products
- Brilliant flexible benefits including electric cars
- Aviva Matching Share Plan and Save As You Earn scheme
- 21 volunteering hours per year
What do we look for? New insights, perspectives, and diversity of thought are invaluable to us. Which is why you don’t need any previous experience in actuarial to apply.
Instead, we’re looking for:
- An undergraduate who can take a year out in industry as part of your degree course.
- Highly numerate and analytical, with the capability to interpret data and come up with solutions to complex problems.
- A working knowledge of industry products and regulations, alongside an understanding of actuarial methodologies and techniques
- Minimum of B grade in A level Maths or equivalent, and on course for at least a 2:1 in a STEM related degree
- Good communication skills, and proficient with a variety of computer packages, in particular MS Excel (intermediate or above)
Most importantly, you’ll need to be naturally curious, keen to take the lead when it comes to your own development, and excited by the prospect of building a long-term career with Aviva.
Where will you be based? This apprenticeship role will be based in York. It’s likely you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this smart working. Three days in the office and two days from home is a typical example, but that can vary. When you join us, your leader will discuss what works best for you, your team, and the business.
Smart working means you’ll still need to live within commuting distance of the office you’ll be based in. That way, you will get to spend time with your team in person as well as virtually. It’ll also help you access the support and people that will help you succeed.

We’re a leading international insurance, savings, retirement, and investment business. We're here to help our customers plan for the future and, when the worst happens, make things right.
You might be thinking that we’re just another boring, corporate firm. But we don’t all wear suits and shiny shoes here. We’re proud to be different and just like our customers, our people are a diverse mix of cultures, genders, ages, perspectives, and ideas.
What’s the application process?
Please note: If we have a lot of responses, applications may close early. So, it’s best to apply as early as you can.
Start by pressing 'apply' to be taken through to our online application.
If you match our criteria (or get pretty close), we’ll ask you to complete a situation strength test and an online numerical reasoning test.
Pass that and next will be a video interview.
The final stage is a virtual assessment day, with tasks that enable you to show us what you're good at and what you enjoy.
Impress us there and we'll offer you a role to start in September 2024.
