Job Description
Questioning minds love data. And with 18 million customers, we have one of the broadest and deepest data sets in the financial services industry – and beyond. Within it, lie the answers to a whole host of fascinating questions, the solutions to thorny problems, and the path to many new and exciting opportunities. Come exploring with us.
Data – and how we use it to serve our customers better and make smarter business decisions – will be one of the most important aspects of our strategy over the next 10 years. And if you join us here as a graduate, you'll be right in the thick of it.
What does it involve? As a Data graduate at Aviva, you will join a global, data specific community that we call ‘Quantum’. Quantum has been created to make sure that Aviva is at the leading edge of data techniques. The community will support, champion, and encourage you on your journey and there will be lots of opportunities to learn from our highly skilled and experienced data colleagues; you will be able to connect with others who are passionate about data, share best practice, and draw on each other’s expertise to help you develop to your potential.
There are lots of different specialisms that you can go into at Aviva if you have a passion for data, including:
- Data Science Using all kinds of scientific methods, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge and insights from data.
- Data Analysis Working closely with colleagues to answer questions and make decisions about the products and services we provide.
- Data Engineering Being part of the team responsible for designing and building the systems we use to collect, store, and analyse data.
- Reporting & Management Information Focusing on how we analyse and visualise information to help make smarter business decisions.
You don’t have to pick a specialism now. You’ll apply for the Data Pathway. Then, throughout the application process, our teams will assess where your strengths lie and which specialism would suit you – so don’t worry if you’re not sure which to choose. Whatever your role is, you'll have the option of enrolling on a higher-level data apprenticeship course that'll provide you with a more structured learning journey and Apprenticeships up to level 7 (Master’s equivalent) are available. If you do enrol, you'll be given dedicated study time to attend classes, complete exercises, and undertake projects.
What's in it for you?
- A permanent job from day one
- A starting salary of £32,500
- Support towards relevant professional qualifications (including Level 7 Master’s Apprenticeship)
- 29 days holiday, plus bank holidays
- Contributory pension scheme
- Up to 40% discount for Aviva products
- Brilliant flexible benefits including electric cars
- Annual performance-related bonus
- Share Save scheme
- 21 volunteering hours per year
- Flexible working and wellbeing support
What do we look for?
- You should either have a degree (in any subject) or be on track to graduate by the end of Summer 2024
- If you have studied a STEM related subject then great, but it is not a pre-requisite, although a passion for numbers and information is an asset
- A genuine interest in computing and the power of data
- Programming experience isn't essential, but an interest to learn would be beneficial
- If you do already understand the basics of a popular programming language like Python, R or SQL, then great!
- A passion for getting your head around complex problems
- The ability to explain your idea in a language that everyone can understand
Where will you be based? Our graduate roles in Data are based in our Eastleigh and Norwich offices – all great locations in which to launch your career.
At Aviva, we ask our teams to think about when they work in the office and when they choose to work at home. We call this Smart Working.
This will vary depending on your role and your personal circumstances, but three days in the office and two from home is fairly typical. When you move to each new assignment, take time to discuss this with your Leader and agree what works for you, your team, and the business.
This mix of home- and office-based working, does mean that you'll need to live (or relocate) within commuting distance of one of the locations above.
About Us
We’re a leading international insurance, savings, retirement, and investment business. We're here to help our customers plan for the future and, when the worst happens, make things right.
You might be thinking that we’re just another boring, corporate firm. But we don’t all wear suits and shiny shoes here. We’re proud to be different and just like our customers, our people are a mix of cultures, genders, and ages.
What's the application process?
Start by pressing 'apply' at the bottom of this page, which will take you through to our online application page.
There, you'll be asked to complete a short questionnaire about your motivations and submit it along with a copy of your CV.
If you match our criteria (or get pretty close), we’ll ask you to complete our Situational Strengths and Numerical Reasoning tests.
Pass those and next will be a video interview. The final stage is a virtual assessment day, with tasks that enable you to show us what you're good at and what you enjoy.
Impress us there and we'll offer you a role to start in September 2024.
Additional Information
We're an inclusive business and we're keen to attract applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Research tells us that women in particular will often rule them themselves out if they feel they don't tick absolutely every box. But don't let that stop you. If you truly believe you have what it takes and can demonstrate that during the recruitment process, we'd love to hear from you.
We interview every disabled applicant who meets the minimum criteria for the job. During your application there will be an opportunity for you send us an email stating that you have a disclosed disability.
Please submit your application online if you can. But if that presents a problem, just email
avivaearlycareers@aviva.com and we'll arrange an alternative method.
